The Egg & I : A Review

We tried something new with the brunch with the in-laws last weekend: we hit The Egg & I at:
2501 West Beltline Highway (by Todd Dr) in Madison.

First things first: the vestibule has a coffee station in it so you can enjoy a java while you are waiting for your table. You walk right past it as you come in and put your name on "the list". We arrived at 11:00 AM and only had to wait 10 minutes for a table.

The place is larger than you would think and has a "Farmhouse Chic" decor to it - it even has a private room for meetings.
If you are in the 60+ crowd, you get a 10% discount, not that I found their prices to be out of line.

Kiddo's get their own menu/activity sheet and some colored pencils to work on it with - which easily distracted Miss Sarah for the short wait for our food:
Notice the cover on the milk glass? We LOVE "safety" cups!

Now, what did we have?
Sarah and I split the "Eggs Plus". 2 scrambled eggs, ranch potatoes, multigrain toast and sausage patties.
It's cheaper than us getting two different meals and works for us.
Mr Andy had the Corned Beef Hash (which I TOLD him would be a mistake)
Eggs and pancakes for my in-laws...their normal fare.

It's hard to get good corned beef hash at a restaurant. In the old days, we made it from scratch with nice pieces of Eye Of Round Corned Beef and large chunks of potato. Add a thick, creamy homemade sauce and we let it set overnight in the cooler. The next day, we made large "patties" out of it and grilled to order as the requests came in - always selling out of it.
Now, they use the canned "dog food" version of it that has little flavor or sized piece that you can pick out with a fork.
Yes, he got the canned "dog food".

Service was fast, food was fresh, we even had a water carafe dropped at the table so we wouldn't have to wait for any refills, which is my ultimate pet peeve.

If we were paying for our own meal, with my quick math it would have come to $18.43 for the corned beef meal, Eggs Plus meal and one milk and we had a small box of leftovers for the three of us.

I'd gladly go again -- they have a ton of healthier items like egg white omelettes, fritatas and more.

Have you ever been there?
