Public Library

The memories of childhood and the local public library...my Mom would walk there with us each week, we would go to the children's area and enjoy story time while she perused the book section for the latest mystery or thriller. Sometimes, we would be herded into a room about the size of a closet, and they would show a movie on the wall! I remember the card catalog...where I would hunt for more books once I found a favorite author! How about the table where you could listen to records with the earphones that were so heavy that you could barely wear them? Afterwards, we would get our tan cards out to present to the librarian so she could stamp the card in the back of our books and we could take them home for a week! We would delightfully walk home with them and enjoy until it was time for the next visit.

Today's libraries are so much more! First of all, there is no huge card catalog! Replaced by the amazing little computers that link to all the other libraries in the neighboring counties...when you search, you can instantly submit a request that will be delivered to your local library AND it lets you know via email or an automated voice mail. The online reading lists and reservations...a very simple way to expand your horizons.

It's a true Multi Media facility, with everything from Wi Fi and books on disc to interactive computers with educational programs for children! Often they have a community room that can be used for meetings or is in use for their free classes on anything from finance to creative writing. And let's not forget the children...after all, creating a lifetime love of books, reading and visits to the library starts early. They usually have a children's play area with miscellaneous puzzles, train tables, maybe even a doll house! There is usually a story time program - that is divided into age groups. Often, these have a weekly theme, Occasionally they have craft events where the little ones can make something to decorate for the season or be used as a cherished gift for a grandparent. Then there are the summer reading programs - but that is another topic, for another day.

The best part? Everything I mentioned is FREE!

WHY buy the latest bestselling book or movie, or even rent it when, if you are patient, you can have it FREE? They even have daily newspapers and the latest magazines - which can save you the cost of an annual subscription. THEN, you can simply return it and live a tad more clutter free (and a greener lifestyle)...there is just one catch: The library is not for just you alone - it is a great collective of items for people to share! If you don't play nice, there is a penalty, LOL-- in the name of library fines. A weekly visit is a good thing - most items can be used up to 30 days but if you only plan on 7, you will never pay a late fee!

If it's been a while since you visited I challenge you to go this week and see what is new! If your library card is so old that it doesn't have a bar code on it - you REALLY need to go, LOL!
