Crock Pot Apple Butter

Apples were on sale this week - and came to about $.50 a pound~ That is a GREAT deal! It's no secret that I didn't make jam this summer, we were too busy and simply had plenty left from last year. It's starting to run low so it's time to get busy in the kitchen.
=)
This recipe is SOOOO easy and SOOOO yummy! The best part is the fact that the end product freezes beautifully so there will be a devoted section of my chest freezer for the new preserves. If you like to get your canner out, you can process it that way to make it shelf stable!I do all the apple work - and pre-measure every thing else out so Ms Sarah can do her part by "seasoning" the apples! This makes it a true family event - the making of the apple butter! Enjoy the recipe -- it it great on lightly buttered English Muffins on a cold winter day!

CROCK POT APPLE BUTTER

Approx. 3-4 lb. apples
3 c. sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. cloves
Dash of salt
3/4 c. water

Fill crock pot 3/4 full of peeled, cored sliced apples. Add remaining ingredients and stir until evenly mixed. Cover and cook on low overnight. If butter has too much liquid, remove lid and cook on high until of desired consistency.

  1. We LOVE this time of the year for recipes like this! Have you tried Zickert's Apples near Deerfield/Marshall? It's close to Sun Prairie (on highway 73 between Deerfield and the interstate ramp) and wouldn't be a drive from your house. Apples are .25 per pound. We usually stock up, and plan to make a trip there this Summer. I hope it's still open this year - the farmer is over 90 yrs. old. Great recipes and advice is usually given when you purchase all the apples. :)

  2. We have apple trees in the back yard but they only produce every other year...this, not being the year, so no major plans for big (30#+) apple baking this year. Although -- 30# at that price would only be $7.50.
    =)

Usually we make apple sauce, apple butter and a lot of apple and caramel apple pies for the freezer along with cream cheese apple bars!

  3. Is there a apple style that works best? Granny smith? red delicious?

  4. We like to use a mixture of Granny Smith, Johnathans, Roma, and Red Delicious. It's all to your taste, of course.........and which varities are available in your area.

  5. I was super excited to go to the Zickert apple place in Deerfield! Thank you for the tip and I got lucky to get a bushel of apples (they were wind fallen from the day before) for $3, for the whole bushel! But still, $.25 per lb was AMAZING!
