10 Things to Make with a Package of Tortillas
I found this cool list on the Mission Tortillas website and wanted y'all to see it - GREAT ideas!
Tortillas may not be the first thing to come to mind when you’re planning your meals, but they should be a staple in your pantry because there are so many ways you can use them – breakfast tacos, wraps, casseroles, burritos and more. Here are 10 Things to make with a package of tortillas:
1) Breakfast: A breakfast burrito is a convenient, portable way to serve a quick and hot meal to start out your day. Usually involving meat, eggs, cheese as well as onions and salsa, the recipes for these variations can be as simple or complex as imaginable. Fill a flour tortilla with your favorite healthy ingredients to pack a nutritional punch into your diet.
2) Pasta: One of the most delicious and time-saving ways to enjoy a tortilla is to use it as pasta. Cut flour tortillas into four equal size triangles and place a pasta filling like cheese or beef in the middle of each triangle. Fold each triangle to form a pocket over the filling, and with a fork, press along the edges of the pocket to seal the ends together. Bake until golden brown and enjoy with your favorite sauce.
3)Pizzas: Thin is in! Pizza crusts made from toasted tortillas are quick to prepare and deliciously crispy. Toast the tortilla, top it with cheese, sauce and your favorite pizza toppings, and bake on a baking sheet. Tortilla pizzas are a fun meal for the whole family.
4)Tostadas: "Tostada" is a Spanish word which means "toasted" in English and typically refers to a flat corn tortilla that is toasted or deep fried. Try a healthier option by laying tortillas on a baking sheet, brush the tops lightly with olive oil, season with salt and pepper and bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Layer with festive toppings of your choice and serve — perfect for a casual meal or snack.
5) Wraps: Wraps are simple variations of traditional sandwiches, substituting bread for a tortilla and for fewer calories. Wraps are typically larger in size than normal tortillas and are often available in a variety of flavors. To make a wrap, lay the tortilla flat, load it up with your favorite sandwich ingredients (hot or cold), roll and close the tortilla, and enjoy.
6) Quesadilla: The word "quesadilla" is Spanish, and means "little cheesy thing." Cooking quesadillas requires toasting or grilling cheese and other savory ingredients inside a flour or corn tortilla using a broiler, griddle or open fire. For a meal with more zip, try roasted peppers, shrimp, spinach or black beans — the variations are endless.
7)Burritos: When it comes to burritos in America, bigger is often better. In Mexico, however, burritos are generally rolled very thin and meat is the only filling. To make your own, fold and roll a large flour tortilla to completely enclose its fillings. For a variation, try grilling the outside of the finished product to enhance portability.
8) Dessert: Tortillas not only come in handy for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but can be used to make snacks and desserts. Brush a flour tortilla with olive oil, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and bake. Or, bake a wrap filled with chocolate chips, marshmallows and almond paste for a delicious and easy ending to a meal that even kids will like making.
9) Casseroles: This classic dish usually consists of pieces of meat, various chopped vegetables, a binder such as flour, potato or pasta, and, often, a crunchy topping. Use tortillas as your binder for a quick meal that can easily be frozen.
10) Chips: Use tortillas to make your own homemade tortilla chips. Cut tortillas in half, and then cut each half into four wedges. Brush with olive oil and bake them in the oven until they’re brown and crispy. Season with salt to taste and serve with your favorite dip.
