Frugal Friday: Strech Your Meat
I know this sounds slightly obscene -- I am talking about your FOOD.
(That is for some of my friends - I KNOW what you are thinking.....shame on you!)
Stretching your meat, or even going meatless is a great way to save money!
It's no secret that prices are going up - it starts with gasoline and then,
trickles down into everything else.
It used to be a standard $1.99/# for ground beef -
it is now $.50 higher and we look for a good sale to get it for less!
Thanks to the new Food Pyramid, we are supposed to be eating LESS
meat than we were originally told to.
This is also recommended by the American Diabetes Association,
American Cancer Association and American Heart Association.
If a recipe called for one pound of ground beef, you really should use half of that.
Add beans or rice to the taco/burrito/enchilada meat.
If the pasta salad called for two pounds of diced ham, use only one.
Add a few fresh, chopped vegetables and diced cheese.
Try Skirt Steaks, slice them and use as a garnish on a nice green salad,
or mixed with veggies inside a wrap!
or mixed with veggies inside a wrap!
You get the idea.
It's also good to go meatless!
Make bean burritos, veggie quiche, spaghetti marinara, fritattas, etc.
Try breakfast for dinner: pancakes, waffles, fruit filled crepes, veggie omelets.
This may be a hard switch at first for the "Meat and Potato" eater of the house,
but it's a great healthy change: for both your budget and your body.
Blessings-
Dannelle
