Fun things to do with the kiddos this weekend
Here is a list of fun, frugal things to do with the kiddos this weekend =)
If you are stuck inside with the storms that they are talking about (at least in my area), start working on your Summer Fun List! Don't forget to put things like Kid's Bowl FREE, and some of the ideas below like the Zoo or Farmer's Market on there!
Capitol Square, 6AM - 2PM, rain or shine, no pets, The largest producer-only farmers’ market in the country. All items are produced locally by the vendor behind the table. No resale allowed!
Bratfest
Stop down at Willow Island by the coliseum for a brat or two for charity - lots of other activities there too. Obviously, Brat Fest is about eating brats, but, more importantly, it’s about giving back to the community. The World’s Largest Brat Fest is held every Memorial Day weekend – rain or shine – with proceeds benefitting the local charities that help to staff the event. Brat Fest is also about enjoying good food at great prices while celebrating Wisconsin’s heritage and the people who make Madison a great place to live.
Alternative Brat Fest
Due to political fall out over Governor Walker, a one-day Alt Brat Fest on May 29 in Orton Park, 1103 Spaight St. is born. Local farmers are supplying a lot of the fare, even organic items. In addition to the Weary Traveler, Alchemy Cafe, 1980 Atwood Ave., and the Underground Food Collective, 127 E. Mifflin St., also are helping to organize the event. Money raised will benefit Community Shares of Wisconsin, which supports 63 nonprofit organizations. A donation would also be made to Friends of Orton Park.
People's Bratfest
Sat. May 28th 10 am – 3:00 pm Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd – just off the Capitol Square. People's Brat Fest! Today We Declare Our Independence: Tasty, Delicious Independence! We the People of the State of Wisconsin, in order to form a more perfect Bratfest, establish larger waistlines, ensure domestic enjoyability, provide local entertainment, promote civil discourse among individuals of all political persuasions, and secure Peace and Goodwill for ourselves and our Posterity do hereby ordain and establish this 1st Annual People's Bratfest of the State of Wisconsin! Come on down and enjoy local entertainment, discussion on important issues affecting our communities, and local brats (veggie and otherwise) straight from the Dane County Farmers' Market and locally owned co-ops! What a great way to show solidarity on Memorial Day weekend!

This is the PERFECT time of year to visit and see all the different kinds of lilacs that are in bloom! Have a smelling contest. See if the different colors smell the same. How many colors can you find. Sit on a bench and read a few books. It's a great place for a family visit!

Henry Vilas Zoo
IF YOU GO: To protect animals, the zoo does not provide straws (or lids) when purchasing beverages. You may want to bring your own cup that fits in the stroller cup holders, and transfer a beverage you might purchase while there (and sippy cups for the kids, of course.) Bring a blanket or beach towel for diaper changing or snack time.
