What To Watch For In June!

Everyone knows that produce is seasonal...we have had that talk before as I have stocked up on Easter Clearance items in April and currently, BBQ supplies!

We still follow the seasonal items at our local store so we know when the fruit is in season, and thereby at it’s lowest annual cost. A savvy shopper waits until a product is on sale and then stocks up! The idea is to create a stockpile that will last you 3-12 months, or until the product again reaches its lowest price. (Not that you can do that with fresh produce unless your process it!)

Convenience/Packaged Foods are seasonal just like produce! Every month we have new things to look for. Here is what is "hot" for April - keep your eyes out for the sales and have your coupons ready!

June is National Dairy Month!
That should translate into deals on Eggs,
Milk  (Free Milk Catalina, wyb cereal - it's been awhile on the cereal deals!),
Ice Cream, Cheese, Butter, Yogurt, and whipped cream.
Keep an eye out for In-store dairy coupons or booklets!!

Thanks to Father's Day and the rapidly approaching Fourth of July holiday, there should also be additional sales on grilling items like: Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, BBQ Sauce, Ketchup, condiments, charcoal, salad dressing, potato chips and dips. This is a good time to stock up on the shelf stable condiment items for the whole year!

Seasonal Produce:
Apricots, Blackberries, Blueberries, Boysenberries, Cherries, Bi-color Sweet Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant, Grapes, Honeydew Melons, Nectarines, Peaches, Potatoes, Raspberries, Red Onions, Summer Squash, Strawberries, Sweet Vidalia Onions, Tomatoes, and Watermelon. Look for those Pick Your Own berry places (like Jen-Ehr Family Farm in Sun Prairie) for some fun with the kiddos!

This is right off their website:

Why Organic Strawberries Matter -
Strawberries at JenEhr Farm are grown and certified following organic (MOSA) growing standards. What that means is we grow these delicious berries without the use of any chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. That means all the weeds are hand pulled (more than 300 hours of weeding on the 1 acre field), plants are cultivated and fertilization is done in the fall with compost.

Why do we go to all this trouble? The taste is the first reason. We believe that strawberries grown without the use of petroleum-based chemicals simply taste better. We believe that it’s a more sustainable farming practice, even if it leads to some stiff limbs at the end of the day. And finally, its how we want to eat and the kind of quality we want to provide for our family, friends and neighbors.

Non-organic strawberry fields can be sprayed as little as 24 hours before you come to pick. We don’t want anybody to endanger their health while picking strawberries.

And I can tell you from experience -
they are AWESOME!
Organic berries are the way to go for those big batches of homemade jam!
Happy Stock-piling!
