Zickert's Orchard

Nothing like a trip to an orchard on a crisp fall day!

My friend Anne told me about this place last year and we made a point of visiting this year. It is easy to find on Hwy 73,
just off the Interstate and
GREAT prices!

A large variety of types - even pears for just $.25 a pound.
Most other orchards in the area are easily twice that price!
They are all sorted, washed and ready for you to grab!
They let everyone have FREE samples -
which  made Miss Sarah happy!
They carry "seconds" for $.15 a pound -
those are the ones that are great for making
apple sauce and apple butter.
Those are also the ones I bought -- 50 pounds of them!

Just in case you are curious --
that fills three brown paper grocery bags.
We dumped one bag, at a time, in the sink.

Then I put Miss Sarah to work!

Finally, everything was in the crock pots,
seasoned and covered.
We let them do the rest of the work, while we slept.
In the morning comes the blending -- and canning!
This will taste amazing on those cold winter days
=)

Just in case you are curious...
50 pounds of apples makes
25 Qts Apple Sauce
and
20 Half Pints of Apple Butter
That is 45 jars -- for only $7.50 -- or about $.16 each.
What a bargain!
