New UPC Coupon Codes

Decoding coupons to buy what you want instead of what the coupon is actually FOR is nothing new -- it's been done a long time by people to commit coupon fraud.

We have even seen it on TLC's Extreme Couponing Show (read here) and "newbies" to the game have no clue as they SEE it being done and think it is OK (read here).

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO.......they came up with a solution! Change the UPC codes!

Instead of the small Single code -- they had a "transition code" with BOTH UPCs on it while registers were supposed to be updated across the nation.
NOW, when you print one, you see a single LONG code that covers ALL the info on the coupon, besides "family code". It has info like:
  • Specific varieties
  • No Trial Sizes
  • Certain Stores Only
  • Expiration Date
  • Not to double if the coupon says "Do Not Double"
  • Only 4 per transaction
And more ALL built into it -- to make sure the consumers are actually following the correct intent of the coupon.
You may be like me and find that some stores are either behind the times or have not upgraded and may be required to manually enter the coupon or not accept the coupon at all. (Both of which are always up to the Manager’s discretion.)
-Walmart in Sun Prairie is one of those great examples -- it doesn't read them yet and EACH one had to be OK'd by a CSM. (ugh!)

The plus side?
This will cut out a lot of the coupon fraud.

The bad side?
It may take awhile for all registers to be operational and you may have a little delay when checking out.

  1. The coupons will still have all the info written on them I hope? I am very diligent about using my coupons for the correct items and it makes my day to bust someone in the store commiting fraud. I have done it a few times and management is extremely plesed and will give me a discount or GC!!! People get nasty but I do my part because I'm tired of "criminals" making us hard working legitimate coupon users look bad.

  2. Oh yes, there will still be the printed wording! The UPC change is to help prevent fraud through the registers.
    :)
It will be impossible to "sneak" one bad coupon through.
