So I get this email...
"Hi Dannelle,
I'm one of the producers for TLC's Extreme Couponing. I was looking through your blog, and it seems like you could be a great fit for the show. I was wondering if you'd be interested in applying. If so, (blah, blah, blah......etc.)"
What do you think- Should I do it?
They would have to let me talk about Food Pantries and Homeless people........
=)

Go for it! I came to your couponing class in part because I had watched the show - and I'm very happily couponing away now : ) Also, a number of the couponers on the show talk about how they use their couponing to donate to food pantries - you would be another voice letting people know how attainable it is to use coupons to gather donation items for places and people who need them.
ReplyDeleteHmmm...I don't know. I've been to your couponing class and I read your blog daily. I also watch extreme couponing and the difference, in my opinion, is that they are extreme couponing for entertainment purposes and you are, simply put, an extremely good couponer...which is real and inspiring. Before I came to your class and started reading your blog...I too wanted to be an “extreme” couponer…now I aspire to be an extremely good couponer like you. Being that we all shop at and are familiar with the same stores and store policies in this area, I would hate to see TLC put you in a pretend scenario just for entertainment purposes…but…with that said…if they can show the TV world the Dannelle we’ve all come to know, love and look to for great advice, the Dannelle who has showed us you can be an extremely good couponer without going to the extreme…then go for it girl!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you should do it Dannelle. I liked that show for one or two episodes, then it got old. There's not much to it just couponing, after that they start exploiting the couponers and make them look either greedy or like freaks. I'm sure they are all basically good hearted people like yourself but the producers dictate what goes on and it's not always the message you want to send, it's what gets ratings.
ReplyDeleteI think that reality TV is not actually reality. It would be easy for them to twist your message, unfortunately. If you think you can keep control over the content, then I'd say "Go for it!" My father worked as a department store manager for over 20 years, and he finally stopped agreeing to interviews for the local news around the holidays. They'd often manage to clip his quote in a way that he didn't intend, in a way that showed what they wanted to show. I'd hate for your message of responsible couponing to get lost. I would like more people to know about the wonderful things they can do with coupons... it's a tough decision. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteokay - first of all, do you get PAID for doing it? If not, NO ABSOLUTELY NOT! What would be your goal in appearing? To build your blog and exposure? If you think TLC can give you positive exposure, I'd say go for it. But like a couple others here have posted, I feel they "set you up" quite a lot on that show.
ReplyDeleteThey'd make you into a Danelle "personality" with their heavy editing -subject to their sensationalist whims. They let more "wacko" seeming people (with heavily editing) make the final cut than they do genuine seeming people, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteI'd also think that if you touted that you were on "Extreme Couponers" it would turn off more people than attract them, even if you had your segment posted. I think the snap judgement of most potential followers to your blog would be "Wacko, stay away" instead of "this woman probably has a really good message and I want to learn more". Sorry to be a negative Nancy. I'm fairly certain we'd all support you no matter what your decision! xo
Hm. Tough call. They can't twist your words too much if you don't give them any ammunition. Are you cool under pressure? It's pretty hard to make someone out to be a jerk or crazy if they only have kind things to say and choose their words carefully. Also, it seems all the food they "buy" goes to the local food pantry, so think about all the good you could do by going on the show. It could mean thousands of dollars of food going to the pantry. Pretty tough to say no to that, but think about how it might affect your daughter, too. If you think she'd get a kick out of it and not be disappointed if the show makes you out to be something you're not, then go for it. I'd support you no matter which way you decide. Good luck!
