"Do Not Double"
Occasionally you see coupons that say "Do Not Double" on them or DND and many people get confused by this. They think it is a message for the customer, that the coupon will not be doubled on a double coupon day.
No.
Manufacturers sometimes print this on their coupons to financially protect themselves. They will reimburse the store for the amount of the coupon plus an 8¢ handling fee. However, some stores may get confused and think that the manufacturers should reimburse them for the full amount plus the doubled amount.
No.
The manufacturer only reimburses for the amount on the coupon. The store is fully responsible for the doubled amount...it is usually figured into their "advertising" budget, like a loss leader.
There is one more trick...their UPC numbers.
This is off the OLD UPCs -- the smaller ones that have been slowly replaced. Sometimes a coupon says “5″ as their first number. This means that even if it says “Do Not Double” on the coupon, it will still double automatically! If it says “9″, it will not double automatically and has to be manually over-ridden. That is why it is important to keep an eye on your totals at the register, like I mention in my Envelope System. You can double check quickly that your coupons have all been doubled, regardless of their UPC numbers.
:)
I hope that clears things up - I see a lot of ad match ups that share a coupon and mention that it says "DND" - so they make the readers think it can't be doubled. No worries, it can.

ReplyDeleteWe post that the coupons say "do not double" to err on the side of caution, not to mislead our readers.
Some cashiers/managers/stores have been known to manually halve the value of "do not double" coupons so that they only double to the value of the coupon.
And yes, we realize that these coupons will most likely double on their own anyway, but like I said, we err on the side of caution when calculating our final prices so that readers are not disappointed. It's much better to leave the store getting a *better* deal than you thought you were going to get! :)

Thanks Laura!
DeleteI wasn't talking about PYD, just answering a lot of emails with one post.
:)
Thanks for clarifying, but what do we say to a cashier who tells us "It says do not double"? I had that happen last week and let it go because I wasn't going to argue. Should I be more confident and ask for a manager? What if they say the same thing? I am refering to pick 'n save since tht is the only store near me that doubles. Thanks Again!
ReplyDeletePnS seems to be in their own world sometimes, LOL!
DeleteStart with the store's actual coupon policy and see if it states that they won't manually do it. (or if they will double all that don't say DND)
If I have a cashier error, I simply state that one didn't double - if they have an issue, it's easy enought to ask for the manager on duty. I have never been refused, but the key is to ALWAYS be kind/polite.

I wrote the above on May 18th. On May 19th I went to Double Double Daze at my PnS... Ughhh what a problem. They did not double 3 of my coupons because they said DND on them. I politely asked for a manager (front end manager came over)... I stated what I read in your original blog post and they got mad(not naming you just the info)! The manager refused to manually override stating that they physically couldn't override it even if they wanted to. The cashier then told me to get over it because they aren't going to double it for me. Then another coupon didn't double automatically, this one does NOT state DND and she physically overrode it. Hmmm... I thought they couldn't do that even if they wanted to... I am going to the stores coupon policy next to check it out. Thanks for your help on this but I think I am not going to count on them doubling my coupons that say DND so I am not disappointed when I pay. :)
DeleteAre you claiming that some Pick'n Save's will manually double coupons that start with 9?
ReplyDeleteIt's been a while since I have been to a PnS - I have Copp's more locally, and yes - they do.
Delete:)
9s are getting rarer now with the new UPC system...so it might not become an issue pretty soon.
