Game Night

In an age of technology where everyone seems to be so focused on something that either plugs in or requires batteries, it's nice to bring the family back together for some "low tech" fun.

Game night is a great way to do that! No TV, no gameboys, no Nintendo, no Wii - just an old fashioned board game and the family around the kitchen table having some face to face fun.

Granted, we have a 4 year old so the games are things like Don't Spill the Beans, Candyland or Cootie -- add a few things like Money Bingo (a teacher friend told me math would be easy if they went into First Grade understanding money) or Sight Word Bingo (again, educational fun)...but the old Monopoly and Game of Life are in the closet for the upcoming years with old friends like Operation (Homer Simpson Style). The games are a great investment - figure a $4 game that you play 25 times. That costs you $.16 for the evening of fun - talk about frugal, it's practically free! I don't like to buy them at garage sales because they are usually missing a piece or two - even after they say "complete" on the boxes. I KNOW I have gotten games with missing pieces at children's resale events and won't go there again...

I watch the sales on Black Friday, etc to buy them at rock bottom prices - so I have a few more tucked away for future gift giving events - I know that Don't Break the Ice, Trouble and Perfection are in the stash, just waiting for her to get a little older. Instead of $15 for a game, you can score it for $3-5 on that one day a year!

What does game night do?
Let's you connect to each other with conversation, interaction and create amazing memories of childhood! We never had a regular game night when I was growing up - but we did have one often. Great memories in that harvest gold kitchen with aunts, uncles, Mom and siblings - I just want to make sure some of those same, warm fuzzy memories rub off onto my peanut.

We shoot for Sunday nights, unless the hubby has to work. If he is working, we make popcorn and pick out a movie - snuggle on the couch and enjoy some great Disney masterpiece.
