Broken Glass Jell-O

Image
This dessert is not hard to make, but it is very time consuming. It makes an impressive presentation and is low in fat! Here's the recipe and I hope you enjoy it. Broken Glass JELL-O® 4 3-ounce boxes of JELL-O® brand gelatin* 1 12-ounce can of evaporated milk** 4 envelopes unflavored gelatin *You may use any flavor of JELL-O® that you want. Here I used one box each of blue raspberry, strawberry, lime and orange. **Instead of evaporated milk, you may substitute the following: 1 can of condensed milk, plus 1 can water, or 1 cup of heavy whipping cream. In separate bowls, dissolve 1 box of JELL-O® in one cup of boiling water. Pour into an eight inch square dish or pan. Chill until set, approximately 3 hours. Once set, cube JELL-O® and mix in a 13" x 9" baking pan and set aside (in the refrigerator). In a separate bowl, combine four envelopes unflavored gelatin with one cup boiling water. Let dissolve completely, about 5 minutes. Strain and combine with one can of evaporated

Quick Accounting...

I thought I would quickly crunch a few numbers for you (and me)! It's been about a month since I have done this ...so let's take a look at what's happened: A BIG month for Tupperware, a nice bonus check, a weekend mall vendor even a few Tupperware parties, a weekend crop and I think that covers it! I just slightly went over my January grocery budget (but was able to donate 30 boxes of cereal to our church's food pantry) and we did a mix of FREE things, ate more out of our freezer, created some cute Valentine's for Sarah's class and it let me add a little over $3,000 more to my total and I have $34,437 in the bank! This boils down to an average of $717 a week so far in savings...not too shabby when a lot of people don't save $500 a month! I know I have never accounted for any interest earned on this savings...that is because interest rates are a JOKE right now! We just tucked more cash into a CD and got about 1.5%, compared to the current offer on a savings a

It’s almost here! The popular Frosty Flicks program at Marcus Theatres runs February 5 through March 20, 2011. The series kicks off with a showing of Despicable Me on February 5-6. Frosty Flicks are shown at 10 a.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. on Sundays. You can purchase your ticket in advance (which I highly recommend) or at the ticket office–be sure to go early as many shows sell out. Admission is only $2 per person. Note that there are some changes from last year’s program. Last year, showings were only on Saturdays, so it’s nice to see a Sunday option. Also, the ticket price has been reduced from $3 to $2 per ticket. However, the trade-off is your ticket purchase does not include popcorn as it did last year. The Frosty Flicks schedule is as follows: February 5-6 – Despicable Me February 12-13 – Nanny McPhee Returns February 19-20 – Alpha and Omega February 26-27 – Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore March 5-6 – Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole March 12-13 – Meg

Another Sentry Store Doubles!

OK - I had posted a while back that Sentry in Janesville doubled coupons - up to $.50, with no limit (you could use as many as you wanted) and there was NO minimum transaction! I just got off the phone with Sentry Hilldale (Metcalfe's) and they are doubling too! Here is their policy info right from the e-mail they sent me: 1) We will double 10 coupons up to $1.00 each Wednesday and Saturday per person, per day. 2) There’s a limit of 3 like coupons per item, for example if you have a Healthy Choice soup coupon, you can get three total Healthy Choice soups, not 3 chicken noodle, 3 tomato etc. 3) Coupons that do not scan will not be accepted. 4) If you have a $1.00 coupon and the item is eligible for doubling but is under $2.00 your item will be free, with no cash back. Any applicable tax is covered by the customer. 5) As far as rain checks go, any items that you use will be subject to the 10 coupon limit per person, per day. ***I am waiting to hear if they take printed coupons and al

Chinese New Year, and a review

Image
Happy Chinese New Year! I scrapped my dinner plans of grilled cheese tonight in honor of something a little more fitting to kick of the next two weeks of fun! Teriyaki Chicken! I had gotten a free box of LaChoy Creations dinner kit and pulled it out...pretty easy to prepare! Cut up and cook a little chicken... Then you add the rice, sauce and water...where it looked a little boring to me...so I added about 2 cups of mixed carrots and peas Let it simmer for about 15 minutes with the top on and you are ready to dish up! All you need then is a pair of chopsticks and a willing Guinea pig and you are ready to go! She loved it! I must admit, it wasn't bad -- not something I would serve often, but it makes for a good "emergency" dish and could easily serve 5-6 people once you add the veggies! Now, if I only had a fortune cookie...........

One Dead Couch

Image
When having little people, and pets, things like furniture die. They get spit up on, chewed on, bounced on, spilled on and more. Oi Vey! You are looking at a couch that is almost 10 years old and made by Broyhill. I won't tell you what it cost, but know that to this day, it is in better shape than his big brother was when that hit the City of Madison chipper this summer. The support on the right side is broken. The arms torn, the cushions are torn. I would happily dump this one too but we would be seriously lacking in seat space if I did...and I am still hearing from DH how the missing one was "still good" and we had paid a lot of money for it.......(sigh). What to replace it with and not drop $500+ ?? I thought of Freecycle - but not with the bed bud epidemic! (eww...) A couch cover or sheet won't help because it is physically broken. Seriously, you can sit on the right side and slowly disappear, LOL! I have a feeling I will be searching the ads soon -- but kind of h

The Blizzard....

Image
It is all over the news, starting this morning, we are getting snow. A LOT of snow. 16 to 18 inches by the time it is all over... Yippe. (Can you sense my enthusiasm - LOL?) OK - what is the big deal? I know I live in the Midwest, it is winter and we WILL get snow! It is the media hype that creates the panic for so many. It is turned into Snow-maggedon with the constant coverage and news weather alert cut-ins!. People start to panic, hit the stores and cover in fear. It is insane! What do I do to prepare? Not much, LOL **I already have a houseful of food. **We have a generator if the power goes out - this will supply the tiny bit of electricity needed to keep our boiler going so we stay warm. **I have plenty of "rainy day" projects for Ms Sarah to do - like finish her class Valentine pass outs, math workbooks, board games, etc **I will hit the store this morning and get 2 gallons of milk and some fresh fruit with the overages, using a few of my vouchers from last week's c

Birthday Parties

OK. I have only one kid and love to make it fun -- but can't see how some people spend hundreds of dollars for a 2-3 hour party! Honestly, it blows my mind! As I look around, birthday parties must be big business! Bowling alleys charge $11.95 a kid to bowl, have soda and cake. The local bounce house has parties that are $220 to $360 for 1-2 hours and a cake. You can have a crafty party at Michael's Craft store or even a Party at McDonald's... I look at that average $15 per kid and think of 15 years of parties, with at least 10 kids in attendance and am floored at a price tag of over $2,000. For a party! I remember the fun birthday parties of my childhood: balloons, cake, pin the tail on the donkey and a gift for all of the kids. One year it was a sleepover! I don't really think my folks spent tons of money on a party, yet I fondly look back on them. =) I hope I am creating those memories for my daughter. Each year we have a "theme" and build the party around i
